Canadian Rwandese Foundation of People with Disability-CRFPD

Directors

Canadian Rwandese Foundation of People with Disabilities in Alberta (CRFPD) is a non-profit organization founded in 2017 and incorporated in the Government of Alberta, Canada. It is in partnership with Rwanda-Canada Hope for Disabled (RCHD), a Rwanda based organization. CRFPD is made up of people who truly love and care. This is seen right from founder members to our dedicated staff, donors and volunteers. We love and care about what we do, about the people we serve, about their family and community and about the society we live.

In 2017, Mr. Cyrilo Simpunga the founder of Canadian Rwandese Foundation of People with Disabilities (CRFPD) was realizing the impact of being disabled for more than twenty years. Having lived with disability for all that long, having witnessed the suffering being faced by persons with disabilities especially in developing countries, he sat with the friends who also had empathy for the persons with disabilities and came up with an idea of advocacy and assisting persons with disability in Rwanda and elsewhere. Their focus was especially on developing countries which have no enough resources to cater for persons with disabilities or any special need. Rwanda became number one because it was one of the countries they have a good knowledge, however CRFPD has a long term goal of advocating for persons with disability in many developing countries as much as possible. As a result, they came up with an idea of forming and registering a Foundation under five people who were counting more than five years working with individuals with disabilities in Edmonton, Alberta. With their gained experience and passion of caring for such persons with special needs, they reflected about the similar situation being faced by the same people in Rwanda and any other developing country, and came up with a strong idea of opening the Canadian Rwandese Foundation for People with Disabilities (CRFPD). This foundation is based in Edmonton, Alberta and its major objective is to make a difference to persons with disabilities in Rwanda and elsewhere by giving them special love and care and to assist their full inclusion in their community. The founders knew and accepted that there were disabled people in Rwanda and elsewhere in under development countries who needed to be cared by providing all possible assistance to meet their special needs, but they questioned and challenged the existing means and capacity of how that care was provided in their countries. Not only did they believe that things should be different, they believed that things could be different with increased means and capacity acquired in all possible ways. And so, with Canadian Government, Rwandan Government and all well-wishers, they totally believe and willing to make them different.

There are many disabled people in Rwanda and elsewhere who were born disabled or lost part of their libs and sensory organs (legs, arms, back, eyes, hearing, etc) and can’t afford easily the artificial ones. The aim of CRFPD is to support the individuals with special needs by all possible means in order to facilitate their inclusion in the society they belong. In short term, we shall start by delivering to them the medically tested artificial limbs, clutches, wheel chairs, walkers, walking sticks, hearing aids, special transportation means, etc acquired from the well-wishers and donors. In the medium and long term, CRFPD will introduce some schools or training facilities, group homes for persons with special need, care and social inclusion. This assistance by CRFPD to individuals with special needs in Rwanda and elsewhere is for the purpose of giving equal opportunity to these individuals, not to become equal, but to become different – to realize whatever unique potential of body, mind and spirit they possessed.

About our Charity

Our Vision

To bring hope to persons with disabilities through their physical, spiritual or moral rehabilitation thereby facilitating their full integration in the community they live.

Physical Rehabilitation:

  1. This aspect focuses on restoring physical abilities, mobility, and functionality for individuals with disabilities. It includes therapies, exercises, and assistive devices to enhance their independence.
  2. By providing physical rehabilitation, we offer hope to those who may have faced limitations due to impairments, accidents, or health conditions.

Spiritual Rehabilitation:

  1. Spiritual well-being is essential for everyone, including persons with disabilities. It involves nurturing the inner self, finding purpose, and connecting with something greater.
  2. Spiritual rehabilitation acknowledges that disability does not diminish one’s spiritual worth. It encourages hope, resilience, and inner strength.

Facilitating Full Integration in the Community:

  1. Integration means more than physical presence; it’s about active participation and belonging.
  2. Communities should be accessible, welcoming, and supportive. This involves removing physical barriers, challenging stereotypes, and promoting understanding.
  3. When persons with disabilities are fully integrated, they contribute their unique perspectives, talents, and skills to community life.

Our Mission

To support and encourage individuals with disabilities and their families to achieve their full potential as members of their community.

  1. Inclusive Education: Ensure that students with disabilities have equal access to quality education. Inclusive classrooms benefit all students by promoting understanding, reducing prejudice, and strengthening social integration.
  2. Individualized Support: Recognize that each person’s needs are unique. Instead of focusing solely on diagnoses, get to know the individuals in your community. Understand their strengths, challenges, and aspirations. This personalized approach allows you to provide targeted support.
  3. Modeling and Consistency: Demonstrate desired behaviors and routines. Consistency helps individuals with disabilities understand what to expect, creating a sense of security and predictability
  4. Collaboration: Work closely with professionals, families, and caregivers. Understand the existing support systems and goals for each individual. Collaboration ensures a holistic approach to their well-being.
  5. Community Engagement: Encourage participation in community activities, events, and social gatherings. When individuals with disabilities actively engage, they contribute to the community’s richness and diversity.

Our Values

Faith

Commitment

Trust

Respect

  1. Faith: Trust is at the core of faith. It involves relying on another person, believing what they say, and being willing to take risks based on that trust1. Imagine a bridge suspended over a deep chasm. Faith is the conviction that the bridge will hold, even when we can’t see the other side.
  2. Commitment: Commitment is like tending to a garden. It requires consistent effort, nurturing, and dedication. Picture a gardener who diligently waters and tends to the plants, ensuring their growth and flourishing. In charity, commitment means staying true to a cause, even when challenges arise.
  3. Trust: Trust is the cornerstone of any charitable endeavor. Imagine a handshake—a simple gesture that signifies mutual confidence. In charity, trust involves believing in the intentions and capabilities of others. It’s the unspoken pact that binds people together in their shared mission.
  4. Respect: Respect is akin to a delicate dance. Picture partners moving gracefully, honoring each other’s space and rhythm. In charity, respect means recognizing the inherent worth of every individual. It’s treating others with kindness, empathy, and dignity, regardless of their circumstances..
